The Players of the Game

Why is that so many people say they don’t want to come to church? Here are some people who are in the game of life but for one reason or another feel like it is better to play alone. Maybe their story is the same as yours, maybe their is someone in your life that you have said the same words.

There are NO PERFECT PEOPLE in the church. There are no perfect players in the game of life, that is why we need each other. That is why we need to be the church team that gets people just like this from just being spectators when it comes to knowing Jesus. It is our prayer that Elevation Christian Church will be that team.

Taking Care of the Team

One of the things that I love to be able to do is coach athletes. I love being involved with the teaching and training of individuals that are seeking to get better at the sport that they are involved in. There are so many things that are involved with making sure that an athlete is prepared to get in the game. There is the physical training an athlete must be conditioned to be able to sustain the activity in competition. There is the knowledge of the competition for instance wrestling you need to know as many different moves as possible in any given situation. Football athletes need to know what the opposing team is going to do either on offense or defense through film and through playing against a scout team. A coach needs to make sure that he takes care of his team in both of these areas.

As leaders in the church we are to be the coach of the teams that God has entrusted to us. So why is it that we sometimes do such a better job when it comes to getting people ready to play a sport then when it comes to getting into the game of life as a believer in Jesus Christ.

“Care for the flock of God entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God”. 1 Peter 5:2 (NLT)

So for the leaders of church teams there are a couple of things we should always keep in mind. Our main goal is to prepare the team to be ready to get in the game. It is the goal of parents, small group leaders, class teachers, and the staff of the church to work together to prepare the team for the game. We are to be the ones that coach with a willing heart for the benefit of the team not for our benefit. So the question that I have is; “What are you doing to prepare your team to do to get in the game?” How are you as the coach ensuring that your team is ready for the game?

Music Monday

Ok, so I have to say that I love the music that Hillsong shares with the rest of us. They are definitely making the big C church better off with the amazing worship music that they write and perform. If you listen to worship music and think that is nice but I would never really listen to that during the week, that is just church music. Well, this is not your average church music.

I want you to know that this is the kind of music that I pray we are able to have at Elevation and I know that the man that God is bringing to share his talent with us as a church is a Godly man. I know that we are all so excited to not just start a church but be part of a REVOLUTION!

Band of Brothers

My most favorite movie series is called “Band of Brothers: The men of Easy Company”. In this series of movies your truly get to experience what it was like for a group of young men that go from training to be soldiers to becoming battle hard veterans and heros to their country. I encourage you to take the next few moments to just share in the words that they share about their battles and their lives.

It is the statement that Dick Winters makes at the end of this clip that gets to me the most. ”I served in a company of heros!” Won’t it be great at the end of your life to be able to say that you served or you did life together in the company of men that you can call heros. Heros to their wives, heros to their children, and heros in their faith. I pray that you are able to find that “Band of Brothers” that you may walk through life’s battles together.

“Will you join me in fighting against Ramoth-gilead?” Ahab asked.

And Jehoshaphat replied, “Why, of course! You and I are brothers, and my troops are yours to command. We will certainly join you in battle.”

Guys what life are you giving up?

Over the last week I have heard stories of husbands that would rather hang out with their buddies then with their families. The situation that was explained to me was a group of guys where hanging out at one house watching sports while their wives and kids were at another house. But then it came time where one of the husbands said “Got to go and be with my daughter while my wife goes some where.” With that the others make comments about just need to to be away. In fact at one point in time one wife returns to the house where the guys are at and is told to just go home he will be there later.

The question that I have are what the crap are these guys thinking? Did they think that marriage and fatherhood were weekend jobs? That they could still hanging out with their high school buddies and just show up at home when it fit there needs? What we need to realize is that no matter what we are called to first be husbands and then dad’s that in these two places that we might hold is a great responsibility and a great opportunity. For many of us this is the opportunity for us to break the cycles of life that we have had to live with, abusive dads, absentee dads, angry dads, and dads that were just lost. It is my prayer that the guys that read this realize that they are really not giving anything up, but really gaining so much. You will be gaining a wife that honors and loves you, you will gain kids that will not want just your cash but you.

Ephes. 5:25 (NLT) And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her

You see Jesus gave up His life so that we might have life. So that we might have a life that is great. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take some work and some sacrifice. So really guys what life are you really giving up? Or are you gaining? The choice is up to you!

Take your time at the Table

For some of us the dinner table with our family and friends has become a coffee table with the T.V. glowing in front of our eyes. Well I recently read this Italian quote about the dinner table it says this: “A tavola non s’invecchia.” This amazing statement means this, “At the dinner table no one grows old.” This means that time stops at the dinner table that you can take as long as you can. This statement is not just something that comes from Italy it is also in the bible, take a look and see:

Luke 10:38-42 (NLT) As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. [39] Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. [40] But Martha was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” [41] But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are so upset over all these details! [42] There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her.”

You see Martha was so worried about the meal that she forgot about the company that was there in her presence. Jesus was there and Mary was enjoying the time that she was able to spend with him. Why is it that when it comes to spending time with someone we lose the focus of what is important, the time with them. It is my hope that we as the husbands, fathers, and friends will learn to take the time with the people that God has placed in our lives. That we will take from the Italian saying the thought that as long as we are spending time with those at the table no one grows old. Take the time this week to just sit and be in the presence of the people at your table.

Who is Fighting with you?

It amazes all the time to hear from so many men that they are not doing life with other guys that can speak into their lives. That men today feel that they are tough enough to be able to handle life on their own. One of the things that I have learned over the years is that I need to surround myself with men that are willing to fight. I need to surround myself with men that see that this life lived in a relationship with Christ needs the support of others that are see the need for a battle ready group. Here is a picture for us to look at when it comes to what kind of guys we need in our battle ready group:

1 Chron. 12:8 (NIV)

Some Gadites defected to David at his stronghold in the desert. They were brave warriors, ready for battle and able to handle the shield and spear. Their faces were the faces of lions, and they were as swift as gazelles in the mountains.

David was in the midst of a battle. Saul was hot on his trail and he need to surround himself with men that were battle ready. Well we need the same thing because whether you want to believe it or not there is an enemy and he is seeking to destroy you. So what made the men that are fighting with David so special? Well, just look at how they are described. Read the above verses again. These men are prepared for the fight that means that they have experience (older), these men carry the right weapons for battle (believers in Christ), these men with their faces alone show that they are not afraid of the battle (honorable warriors). The question that I have for you, “Do you have these type of men around you?” If you don’t then you need to find them because with out them you may just not be able to survive the battle. Go today and find the men that will fight with you the battle of life.

Here is a song that my son brought to my attention by Toby Mac. I love the urgency behind what he is saying “Tonight is the Night”. It is my hope and prayer that we as God’s people see the urgency to sharing about what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Faith Fight Everyday

Did you know that every day that I have a fight? I have a fight with myself. No some of you may automatically think like me and picture Jim Carey beating himself up in the bathroom in the movie “Liar, Liar”. I want you to know that is not what I am talking about. I don’t know if I could literally give my self a right cross to the face.

What I am talking about is that every day I fight myself the side of me that wants to do what I want and not what God wants. I fight with the way that I spend my money, the way that I talk to my wife and kids, I even fight with weather or not I want to even spend time with Jesus and His word. Because you know what it would be much better if I just slept in at least a half hour. I deserve that don’t I? I believe that this fight is what leads to affairs, divorces, abuse, addiction, and the loss of our families. I even believe this fight is what is allowing men to stop leading the families that God has called them to lead.

Galatians 5:17 (NLT) “the old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is opposite from what the Holy Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite from what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, and your choices are never free from this conflict.”

We are always going to be at odds with ourselves. We are always going to be virtually in a fist fight with ourselves over what we are to do or not do in this life and our choices will always have some conflict. But there is hope. There is a way to deal with this fight. It is to trust in the complete work of Jesus Christ. It is to know that the distractions of this life were nailed to the cross and crucified. We need to seek to learn from the greatest fighter that ever walked this planet, Jesus.

Let’s learn to fight and fight with the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ, because that will only be the way that you will ever be able to defeat, YOU!
